Service to Aboriginal Youth (STAY)

What does the program offer?

Service to Aboriginal Youth (STAY) engages with young Aboriginal people in Coober Pedy aged 12-25 and encourages and supports them to participate in programs and activities that provide assistance around education, training and employment, life skills development, relationships and better connections to family, community and peers.

The aim of the program is to mentor children and young people in Coober Pedy who are, or may be at risk of becoming involved with the youth justice system.

Outcomes include

  • Increased self esteem and confidence
  • Skills for avoiding risky behaviours/engaging in positive social behaviours
  • An increase in quality of relationships with peers, parents and other adults
  • Youth voice in the community
  • Decrease in young people becoming involved in the youth justice system
  • Decrease in mental health issues (depression/self harming)
  • Increase in mental health and physical wellbeing (satisfaction, confidence, empowerment, healthy choices)

The Coober Pedy Youth Shed is a service designed for young people aged 6-18 years of age. It is aimed to provide a safe and central location where youth can hang out with their peers.

The Youth Shed helps to give young people a sense of purpose so that they can build positive relationships and stronger connections with peers, family and community. It delivers targeted activities such as:

  • Health and wellbeing programs
  • Blue light discos
  • Comprehensive school holiday programs
  • Leadership programs
  • After hours homework groups
  • Peer mentoring
  • Cooking and life skills programs
  • Other initiatives developed by the young people themselves
