Foster Care offers children a safe, supportive space to heal and grow when they are unable to be at home.

Carers come from all walks of life - what matters is your ability to provide a safe and nurturing home.

Let’s get the process going. Help me find out more!
Foster care relies on compassionate people who can provide a safe and nurturing home for children who are unable to live with their birth families. While reunification with family is always the goal where possible, this is not always achievable.
As a foster carer, you help children feel safe, supported and able to thrive, while staying connected to what matters most – their identity, family, culture and community. Carers come from all walks of life; what matters most is your commitment to providing a stable, caring environment.
A foster carer provides a culturally safe, stable and positive environment that caters for the physical and emotional needs of a child who is unable to live with their birth family. Being an AFSS foster carer involves nurturing the child’s self esteem and identity and ensuring that there is a strong connection to their Aboriginal culture and heritage. A foster carer also provides an environment in which a child can learn, grow and reach their potential.
Foster carers are part of a care team consisting of AFSS Carer Liaison Officers, social workers, the SA education department, doctors, psychologists, and other services who all work together to support the stability and growth of the child.
Becoming a carer with AFSS means being part of a community-led organisation that places culture, connection and care at the heart of everything we do.
Our carers play a vital role in providing safe, nurturing homes where children feel supported, valued and connected to who they are. At AFSS, you’re not just opening your home – you’re walking alongside a child, supported by experienced staff, strong cultural foundations and a shared commitment to positive futures for children in care.
Carers receive thorough training to prepare them for each stage of fostering.
Round-the-clock help ensures carers always have someone to turn to.
Whether it is respite, short-term, long-term or emergency care, AFSS works with you to find a caring role that suits your life and capacity.
Care that centres the wellbeing of both children and carers.
We respect and support each child’s ties to culture, family, and community.
We welcome carers from all backgrounds, lifestyles, and family structures.
