On Friday the 7th of August, AFSS proudly celebrated National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day 2026 at the St Clair Recreation Centre, bringing together well over 700 children, families, carers, Elders, community members, staff and partner organisations in a powerful celebration of culture, connection and community.
This year’s theme, “Living Our Truth,” highlights the importance of truth‑telling and the vital role culture plays in the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. It also reminds us that culture is lived every day through relationships, language, stories and connection to Country.
Children’s Day remains an important opportunity for AFSS to connect with families, strengthen relationships and promote foster and kinship care pathways in a culturally safe, community‑led environment. We were pleased to welcome so many people who share our commitment to ensuring Aboriginal children grow up strong in culture.
A special acknowledgement to our new CEO, Shona Reid, who joined us for her first Children’s Day with AFSS, spending the day connecting with children, families and carers.
Our celebration featured an incredible line‑up of Aboriginal performers and cultural educators:
Tarnda – Co‑founders Bryce and Taylah brought cultural education to life through knowledge‑sharing and meaningful learning moments. Bonny delivered a powerful Welcome to Country.
Tilly Tjala Thomas captivated the audience with her beautiful voice.
Imbala, led by David Booth and his sons, shared storytelling, art and cultural knowledge, with David also playing the Yidaki.
Bec Gollan delivered a heartfelt performance showcasing her artistry and storytelling.
The day also included family‑friendly activities and community engagement, from a skateboard art workshop by Songline Skateboarding and a Rock-Climbing Wall by RockAbout to interactive children’s activities, and sporting involvement from the Adelaide Football Club. A range of food trucks added to the atmosphere and was a big hit with families and community members.
A sincere thank you to our partner agencies and AFSS staff. I especially acknowledge the outstanding efforts of my team, the Aboriginal Kinship & Foster Care Team whose planning and dedication brought this event to life.
Most importantly, thank you to the children and young people at the heart of today’s celebration. Your strength, pride and connection to culture remind us why this day matters. Together, we will continue creating spaces where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children feel safe, valued, connected and empowered to live their truth.
